Poor Peanut !!
Just a quick update while Laila is resting beside me. We had a rough night with her fever spiking again and then having another convulsion...the doctors warned this might happen so I was prepared. She still hasn't eaten anything but I managed to get 4 oz of milk down and it has stayed so far.
Fever is down and while she is still lethargic she is starting to look a little brighter and more like herself. I think the meds are starting to kick in as well which for her is a good thing. Daddy is on his way back from Drumheller and I we will both be happy to see him !!
I'm hoping for a little rest shortly....we are both in need of it !!
What a day !!!
So I have mentioned many times in the last month that Laila (& I) have been quite sick well today little miss Laila's sickness got the best of her. When she got up this morning she was really clinging to me but it's been like this since she got sick so I didn't really think much of it.

Spring break is here ....
No big plans for this Spring Break...just going to hang out with the kids and have no schedules for the next 10 days. It has been a busy 3 months since Christmas so we are all welcoming the break. Daddy is even planning on taking a few days off next week so it will be nice to have everyone home.
My plan is to get Laila and I rid of this sickness that has been lingering for what seem like forever ! I'm going to spend a little time in the kitchen stocking our freezer again. But most of all just spend lots of quality time with the kiddos doing all of those litle craft projects that I have collected but never seem to have the time to do. As well dive into a few of the new games Hayden got for Christmas but hasn't opened yet. I'm hoping the weather is good so we can get out and enjoy some fresh air.
I'm purposely going to be away from the computer during this time...I might check in once and a while but just going to take a little mental break from the "Electronic" world.
For those just starting your break...I hope you have a lovely week off. For those just returning from your breaks I hope they were great !
Chow for now !!
Wordless Wednesday - March 18th
This and That...
Not much shakin' at the Suleman household the last few days. The drugs for my chest cold are really working well...still have the cough but the dr. said that would take at least a few weeks to disappear.
Eric Carle
We love Eric Carle books in our home !! I was delighted to find this snippet on Ali Edwards blog the other day and thought I would share it with you all.
What's your favorite Eric Carle book ? We are loving the "Grouchy Ladybug" right now !
Happy Saturday !!
It's amazing what a few good doses of drugs can do for a sick mama....while I still have the nasty cough I'm already feeling like I have more energy. Another week or so I should be right as rain and back to being a Simply Happy Mama !
We had a nice quiet day inside today (which is sad because it was finally super warm in Calgary). But it was okay to just chill here....Daddy had to do a few hours of work (which turned into 7), Hayden was hanging downstairs with him and Laila of course was shadowing me while I tidied the toy room and office.
Faruq and Hayden went to the 'Dome again for the last playoff game at the Brier....tomorrow night is the final game with Alberta (Yay !!) facing off against the winner of the game tonight. I think it is great that we are able to expose Hayden to lots of new adventures ...I guess that is one of the perks of living in a larger city. The highlight for him last night was not the curling game but meeting a bunch of the Calgary Flames players (the team has been on the road because the curlers have invaded their ice but these guys are injured so aren't playing right now).
After Laila went to bed I caught up on a few TV shows that were PVR'd from earlier this week....The Office always makes me laugh and I thought the episode of Private Practice was pretty good. As well, I have been trying to remember how to use Photoshop Elements - Man you do forget if you don't use the program for a while. It's slowly coming back but I'm still not sure where to start digi-scrapping from since it has been so long.
I ♥ faces - Week 10 (Kids Entry) - Green Theme
Family Friday and Mama Ranting...
Family night is taking a little break this week. The boys are taking in the last few days of the Tim Horton's Brier so Laila and I are left to fend for ourselves.
So..... according to my doctor I guess I am really sick with a pretty serious chest infection (he said my chest sounds like a 70yr old who has smoked all their life...Nice hey !!). I knew I was sick but really I was just trying to deny it ( I'm not a lover of medicine but instead prefer to let the body take care of sickness naturally.) Plus mom's aren't allowed to get sick....Are they? I mean who will keep the kids alive while mommy's taking a "personal" day.

DWTS
Any fans of Dancing with the Stars ?
This years line up of Celebrities (if you can call some of that) are not overly entertaining nor exciting ! I did PVR last nights episode and manage to watch it this morning. Is Carrie the Paula of DWTS this season? Maybe she was just going easy on them because it was the first dance but man she was just too nice - Some of these celebs just will never be able to dance so why sugar coat it.
The funniest were Ty Murray and Steve Wozniak - It doesn't really matter which one goes first they were equally as bad. Maybe Steve could offer everyone a free MacBook if they vote for him - kidding. He seems like a lovely guy but dancing is just not his thing.
Kudos to the two last minute replacement who stepped in for Jewel and Nancy O'Dell. Holly Madison and Melissa (I was dumped on National TV last week - Remember me?) Rycroft both did an awesome job for only have less then a week to prepare.
A few favorites are Shawn Johnson, Chuck Wicks and Melissa Rycroft. I'm glad to see Julianne Hough, Tony Dovolani, Edyta Silwinska and Maksim Chmerkovskiy (too bad he is now engaged to sour puss :} ).
A few good eats...
I spent a few hours in the kitchen this morning before the kid got up and made two new recipes.
Boys Vs. Girls - Eating Habits !!
So I have a question for all moms out there that have little girls eating solid foods !
My kids are vastly different in a few ways with eating being the biggest. For the last 4 years we have had "on-going" battles with Hayden with regards to eating. He did not have an easy time going from formula to solid foods. He is very texture sensitive so that alone limits a lot of foods he would even consider trying Out of pure frustration I started to give him things I know weren't the best choices nutritionally. Because of the improper diet he suffered constipation problems which led to more then one visit to the ER.
Now little Laila is just the complete opposite. She went from formula to solid food with no problems. She is an incredible eater and will try anything & everything we give her. I did a lot of research along the way when we were having issues with Hayden so I was better prepared for her (although I must admit I still worry that she will start to reject food and become like Hayden but know that's not likely to happen).
I found a great book called "Blender Baby Food" by Nicole Young and it was a terrific starting point for me when starting to introduce solid foods to Laila. I prepared (and froze using these) so many different things for her to try that now at 15 months she will happily eat what we put in front of her. She has an incredible appetite and eats more then Hayden does on a daily basis. Thankfully there is no constipation problems for her ! :}
So a few questions to ponder ...

Family Night - Mexican and Mama Mia for us tonight !!
So Friday has rolled around again so it must be "Family Night". Honestly, Hayden is far more diligent on reminding me of this fact....I think I'm usually just exhausted from the weeks activities.
Tonight is Mexican food (kind of)...We are having Tacos in "kid friendly" edible bowls, Southwestern rice salad and a tasty Layered Mexcian dip with tortilla chips. I have made these recipes so many times and can honestly say they are all very yummy and easy to prepare. The first two came from the Kraft Canada site and the last is from Sandy Richards show "Fixing Dinner" on the Food Network.
- 8 Flour Tortillas (6 inches)
- 1 lb extra lean ground beef (I have used turkey as well)
- 1 cup of salso
- 1/2 cup Kraft Cheddar Cheese (shredded)
- 5 lettuce leaves
- 1 large tomato
- 1/4 cup of Ranch Dressing
- Preheat oven to 350'F. Microwave tortillas on HIGH for 30 seconds or until soft.
- Press tortilla into each of 8 medium muffin cups to form a bowl. Carefully fold edges of tortilla back to keep an opening for the filing. Bake for 10 minutes.
- Brown meat in large skillet on medium heat, drain. Stir in salsa and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low; simmer for 10 minutes - stirring occasionally.
- Cut or shred lettuce - makes about 2 cups chopped.
- Chop tomato into 1/4-inch pieces with knife (about 1 cup)
- Spoon about 1/4 cup of the meat mixture into each tortilla bowl.
- Top evenly with cheese, lettuce and tomatoes. Drizzle with dressing.
Southwestern Rice Salad (okay it's not really Mexican but the kids love it !)
- 4 cups of Minute Rice - uncooked
- 1 can Whole kernel corn, drained (14 oz)
- 1 cup canned black beans, drained and rinsed
- 1 medium red pepper, chopped
- 3 medium green onions, sliced
- 1 cup of Kraft Signature Classic Herb Dressing
- 1 cup of salsa
- 1 cup of lightly crushed tortilla chips
- Cook rice as directed - place in a large bowl and let cool. (I made mine last night)
- Add corn, beans, peppers, onions, dressing and salsa; Mix it lightly - Cover and refrigerate for at least an hour. (I try to let it chill for about 4 hours - the taste is richer then).
- Top with crushed chips just before serving.
- 1lb extra lean ground beef
- 2 tsp chili powder
- 2 tsp cumin powder
- 2 tsp onion flakes
- 1/2 cup ketchup
- 1/2 cup water
- 2 cups of grated Tex-Mex Cheese (4 servings)
- 1 can of Stagg Chili-Vegetable Garden (14 oz)
- Tortilla chips (pita bread if you like)
- Set oven t 375'F
- Brown beef at med-high in a large non-stick fry pan.
- Add spices and stir.
- Add ketchup and water when meat is no longer pink.
- Simmer until thickened and remove from heat.
- Layer the following in the individual (oven-safe) bowls. In this order 1/3 cheese, 1/2 meat and all the veggie chili.
- Layer again with remaining ingredients in this order - 1/3 cheese, meat mixture, 1/3 cheese.
- Place in hot oven - set timer for 20 minutes

Lovely Little Ladybugs Cupcakes
Last year when Laila's 1st birthday was fast approaching I was truly at a lose as to what kind of cake to get her. She really didn't have any favorite shows or characters that I could select from so we ended up having a lovely but non-descriptive cake made consisting of butterflies and fairies.
Since then we have started calling her "our little ladybug" mainly because she has this adorable little ladybug nightlight that she sleeps with. Sooo..... I figure I have a head start on the 2nd birthday party theme and will probably go with you guessed it "ladybugs".
Alphabitty Moments (Week 2)
Hayden took on the role of "Big Brother" after Laila was born and it's been wonderful to watch the bond that they have. While it's not always "happy" times now that she is mobile and likes to get into everything he is doing I know that they will have each other as they get older.

Found this video awhile back and thought it was really well done - It's about 20 minutes but totally worth a look.
Multi-Color Search Lab
I was blog surfing tonight and found this neat site Multicolor Search Lab posted on Design Mom's Blog. Go check it out and have some fun selecting your favorite colors to see what visual fun will be returned to you.
Have Fun !!!
Holy Snow Batman !!
So I guess living in Canada my whole life I would be used to the cold weather but honestly I would trade it in a heartbeat for a warm tropical climate living. I have to believe that day-to-day life would be just easier - no snowsuits, boots and mitts for kids, no shovelling.
When we moved to Calgary almost 4 years ago I thought the nasty cold weather we had endured for almost 20 years was going to be behind us but sadly that's not been the case. The only good thing that Calgary has going for it with regards to the weather is the "Chinooks" - you can get a few feet of snow in the morning but it be gone by the afternoon. The weather can still be cold and downright miserable.
Today was just one of those days ...My hubby needed to catch a 5:30 am flight to McMurray this morning and unfortunately didn't bother to order a car service figuring he would just drive himself. Big mistake....it had rained during the evening and then at some point it turned to snow. He called this afternoon to say he had made it but that the drive was interesting. He had 3 cars slide through intersections barely missing him each time. Calgary drivers are insane when a little snow hits the road and this morning was no exception.
This was the view from my front door when I retrieved the morning paper at 9 am. It's now melting off but it's still a bummer that we got it in the first place.
It's suppose to be sunny and fairly warm for the next few days so hopefully this snow will melt away !!
Monday and not motivated....
Today is just one of those days where I'm just not motivated to do much...truthfully I would love to just curl up in bed and sleep the afternoon away. This chest cold is getting the best of me so I'm off to the doctor's again tomorrow to seek some relief. I'm not a lover of medicine but honestly I can't go without sleep much longer. I'm having myself a little old pity party today. :}
We had an decent trip to Edmonton. Laila didn't nap on the way down so she was a little grizzly bear when we arrived. She is an awesome sleeper but that's because of her regular routine at home. She wasn't eating properly because of being tired and the cycle just went round and round. Poor peanut ! We don't travel a lot with the kids so she isn't used to new surroundings and doesn't adapt well change.
As well, I think the hotel we stayed at managed to put all the kids in the same area because after finally getting Laila to sleep at 11pm Friday night a toddler began to scream and scream and scream for what seemed like hours. My biggest fear was that this lovely little creature was going to wake her up and then the party would really start for us. She managed to sleep through it all but did wake around 6:30 the next morning - which for those who know Laila is hardly enough sleep (normally at home she is a 12 to 13 hour sleeper)
The only purpose for our trip was to go visit Faruq's mom who is recovering in the hospital from knee replacement surgery. It was very hard to visit as she is in a room with two other women but this past weekend was the only time we could go without the kids missing their weekend activities. So we went and had a visit on both Friday and Saturday then back to Calgary yesterday.
Sadly, I didn't get any pictures of our trip either as I had forgot to put my memory card back in my camera earlier in the week and was honestly to cheap to go buy another one for just those few days. We have lots of cards here already and didn't see the point.
Big news on the Hayden front...my little monster lost his first baby tooth this weekend. It's been lose for quite some time now but he finally manage to pull it out on Sunday. Now he is patiently waiting for the tooth fairy to visit us. What is the going rate for tooth fairies these days?
Because of a lack of motivation today I haven't even got anything started for supper tonight...I did manage to whip up two new meal choices for Laila's daily dinners and have them in the freezer as well as a few different veggies but I'm afraid we might end up having breakfast for dinner tonight which really my family won't mind. They love it when I mix it up like that.
The first of the Bachelor two-part finale is on tonight. I'm pretty sure I know what is going to happen but the drama should be worth watching. I have my PVR set up to tape tonight's 3 hour finale then the 2nd "after the rose" tomorrow night when he comes back to announce who is really with.
